Project resources and information / Re: Pelican style cases

Perhaps try Elliott's, but I usually get my hard Shell cases from MCM Electronics.

Day of the dead parade
What are we doing for this? Leon took the skull float and we had used it every day each year. What are we doing this year?

Welcome to Xerocraft. We look forward to seeing you. Also, hello fellow ham! KF7IYJ here (Tech class).

  • Vending Machine: I would like to set up a group project to repair the vending machine. I have already started cleaning it out and fixing some of the electrical bugs, but I would like to organize a meeting to plan what we want to do with it and figure out who can help fix what on it. Tasks include fixing the spring system, installing new networked control system, new graphics/paint for the machine, new glass in the windows, LED upgrades, power usage monitoring, and more.
  • Swamp cooler use and shutdown: Just want to mention that with the new swamp cooler in the front, we should probably be shutting it down at night and turning off the water. During the first day of having it set up, the float valve slipped and slightly flooded the floor. We noticed the overflow right away and not much happened besides the floor getting a nice moping. I think I fixed the issue and it ran just fine after that, but we should probably add shutdown instructions for when the space gets closed down at the end of the night. Adding a solenoid valve to shut the water down when the machine power is off might also be a good idea. I think we have spare solenoids that were donated.

Event and Lesson Ideas / Re: A class on the Vinyl Cutter.

I would be up to attend that. A common procedure is to announce it at a steering meeting with a week or so for notice to be given.

  • Staff Scheduling - Need to restart 2 week schedule at end of meetings
  • Hackaday Hackerspace Listing - I Signed us up

Email me directly. I may have something embedded systems.

*Swamp coolers

*Bike event coming up

Welcome and thanks for stopping by! If you want to teach, I am sure that would be most welcome. Any questions about the woodshop or to inquire about woodshop donations, please be sure to talk to David.

Thanks for the heads up. I think Xerocraft should perhaps sell some of our test equipment as well. Neil, would you be available to attend this? I can use my truck to haul the stuff, but I would like someone to help me figure out what to haul up, and what to sell it for. You seem to be more versed on what to charge for some of the equipment.

RFID Access Status
What is going on with the RFID system? When do we get keys? Is it only going to be used for extended member hours, or 24 hour access? Will we still be using the deadbolt?

We have a phone - answer it
Update on the phone, how to use it, and it should be kept on and ready to answer.

Project Ideas / Re: Precision reflow oven, anyone?
« on: February 07, 2014, 07:46:21 am »
I am very interested in doing this. I am trying to get a toaster reflow for work because I want to learn more about reflow soldering. I would help make this.

Also, if you want  to remove BGA and other annoying packages, it can be done using a heat gun and/or a hot plate. I have to do it occasionally when reworking PCBs.

Off-Topic / Re: What are your impressions of other hackerspaces?
« on: February 04, 2014, 04:06:28 pm »
Compared to other hackerspaces I have seen, I think "Dusty, dirty, down-to-earth crazy workshop" would describe us well. Many other places I have seen appear to be rooms with tables, lots of laptops, and some electronic equipment. Usually you do not see huge metal and woodworking shops like we have, or buildings quite as old and interesting as ours. Still, those more modern places usually do have a few things that I wish we had like A/C (or even swamp) and and a lack of train horns.

Off-Topic / Re: Political Brochures
« on: February 04, 2014, 04:02:58 pm »
What you were seeing is a brochure for the WTF night, a program that was adopted by Xerocraft from BICAS, another group in Tucson who started the meetings and had great success with them. We have a few members who also help run that program for BICAS, and it was proposed we adopt the program as well. The WTF organizers did go through a process to look at different names and presented some ideas at a steering meeting, but ultimately it was decided that the name should remain WTF. While some people have found this an odd name, the organizers of that program chose it and we really have not had any problems resulting from it. The WTF program is apparently doing quite well and as far as I am aware, no problems have arisen from the name. If you have any questions, you are welcome to talk to the organizers of the WTF night. They are all really awesome people and would be willing to answer any questions or comments you may have on the program.

Off-Topic / Re: Email list of Forum?
« on: February 04, 2014, 03:54:12 pm »
We used to be complete mailing list but we left that and are trying to work with the forum due to problems of too many emails arriving per day covering everything from important announcements, long project build conversations, and inane chatter. This caused way too much of a load on peoples inboxs so we created two email lists and the forum. The announce email list is one everyone should be subscribed to. Only staff are able to post to it and it is only used to send out important announcements or alerts. The discussion list is optional, but a lot of things like quick questions such as "Where did the damn tape measure go again!?"  end up there. Finally, we have the forums. We are trying to encourage build logs, non-time critical questions, anything that needs to be kept for others to read, and longwinded topics to get posted here. So far, running the forum has not been that hard because we honestly do not have too many things posted here. Slowly, that is changing, but upkeep is not a problem. When everyone posting is related to Xerocraft in some way, we usually do not have too many problems because we usually know each other in real life.
